We provide Justice Advocacy for people with a cognitive impairment who are involved in any kind of criminal matter on the Central Coast.

Whether you need help with police, attending court, or seeking legal advice, we know that the justice system can be hard to navigate and we are here to walk with you through the process.

With care and compassion, we work with families to help prevent people at risk from entering the criminal justice system. We support those who are in the community with corrections orders, and those on remand. We also assist the incarcerated find a way to be supported once they are released.

We build consistent and reliable relationships with our clients, so that you have one or two dedicated support workers that you can depend on. Our holistic, end-to-end service assists from your first point of contact with police, to the resolution of your court case and beyond.

Who do we support?

From Brooklyn to Warners Bay, we provide quality support to victims of crime, witnesses, suspects and defendants in contact with the NSW criminal justice system who may have a cognitive impairment.

We support those with:

Intellectual disability

Borderline intellectual functioning

Dementia

An acquired brain injury

Drug or alcohol related brain damage, including foetal alcohol spectrum disorder

Autism spectrum disorder

For those who are often isolated, marginalised and who lack advocacy we offer stable, long-term assistance.

Referrals & NDIS

Our Justice Advocacy Service helps those with a cognitive impairment who are in contact with the justice system access the NDIS. We help those already in the NDIS to understand their plan and participate fully.

We advocate for the needs of clients by working with other legal services, such as Intellectual Disability Rights Service (IDRS). We work closely with Community Mental Health, Community Corrections, Department of Communities and Justice, and the wider community to help support you in your journey.

Kinds of Support

At Family Coast Support we help you exercise your legal rights and understand what’s happening during the court process. Importantly, we stay with you afterwards to ensure you have the skills and support to avoid reoffending and falling back into the corrections system.

Our ongoing support improves outcomes:

We work to stop the “revolving door” of corrections by providing practical help with Centrelink payments, housing, and attending appointments with court, doctors and counselling.

We assist with everyday living skills, supporting you to learn cooking, washing, organising, planning, and getting your home life sorted.

We help you to access local community programs so that you can attend sporting, music, dance and art groups.

We understand that families are impacted by the trauma of corrections and the justice system. We can guide your family through this often difficult process.

Our staff genuinely care about your welfare and work to help you move forward in your life.

By maintaining strong relationships, we encourage our clients to build a better future with benefits for the whole community.
